Press Release

During the months of November and December the George Adams Gallery presents new works by Spanish artist, Lino Lago. The current exhibition, Lago’s second solo exhibition with the Gallery, includes 12 paintings as well as two “objects,” all made in 2012.

The paintings in the exhibition are based on either Lago’s versions of Old Master paintings or found, vernacular photographs, all of which contain a purposefully disruptive element. For example, in the “Ciao Bella” series, Lago recreates portraits by Antonio Amorosi, Robert Campin, and Rogier Van der Weyden with careful attention to their technique – and then hand saws the panels nearly in half. Other paintings interpose unexpected images such as in “The Idiot,” ostensibly a vintage family portrait photograph but with one figure inserted upside down into the upper right corner. Additional works in the exhibition include “Another Crap Painting,” a folk-art style representation of a sailing ship at sea, “White Space,” a view of the wall between two works of art, and “Size Matters,” a series of portraits in diminishing scale, the smallest being a self-portrait. The objects in the exhibition include “Museum,” a store-bought table on the underside of which is an oil portrait of the artist’s son; and “Surroundings” another portrait of his son on the sole of a shoe.

Lino Lago was born in Spain in 1973, and graduated from the Universidad Complutense in Madrid. He has exhibited regularly in Spain as well as solo and group shows in Barcelona, Berlin, Copenhagen, Havana, Madrid, Milan, Shanghai, and Vilnius, Lithuania.
