Press Release

During December and January the George Adams Gallery will present an exhibition of new paintings by Andrew Lenaghan.  The exhibition will consist  of 12 paintings completed within the past year, and will be accompanied by a 40 page,  full-color catalogue.

The works in the current exhibition, the artist's fifth with the gallery since his debut in 1995, continue the artist's exploration of the industrial and waterfront areas of Manhattan and Brooklyn. And, while he continues to work from life, Lenaghan introduces several new elements to his work, including  the figure, interiors, and a larger and more complex  format.

The works in the exhibition range from a long horizontally composed View of Manhattan from the North 6th St Pier, Williamsburg, to a beach on Long Island Sound titled Crane Neck, Long Island, to a view of the studio titled Jane at Computer. The centerpiece of the exhibition, however, is a group of rooftop views of Manhattan looking in all directions from Eldridge Street, a series of paintings that are remarkable for their deep space, comprehensive detail and complex compositions.

The works in his 1995 debut measured 8 x 13 inches, and with each of his subsequent shows the scale of work has grown.  In the current exhibition, the largest works, such as the view of the abandoned McCarren Park Pool in Greenpoint (reproduced as the exhibition announcement card) measures 24x48.  While continuing to work from life, the growth in scale is indicative of Lenaghan's increasing interest in detail, in spacial complexity and in continuing to challenge himself artistically.
