Press Release

During September and October, George Adams Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings and drawings by James Valerio in the main gallery space. Concurrently in the drawing gallery will be the debut exhibition of collage works by Charles Marsh.

Charles Marsh: Collages ©1990-2000 is the posthumous solo debut of New York artist Charles Marsh.  Born in 1944 in Greenville, SC, Marsh later moved to New York City with his mother and stepfather. In the early 1960's, he ran away from military school and lived in San Francisco, where he was introduced to the work of Bay Area artists, notably Bruce Conner, George Hermes and Jess. He then moved to London where he remained for ten years before returning to New York in the 1980s. While he never exhibited his work in New York, he became involved in the art scene living in the East Village and working as a freelance art handler and, later, at the New Museum.  The exhibition features a selection of his collages made between 1988 and his death in 2000.  Utilizing flea market frames, images compiled from stacks of old magazines and an odd variety of objects, including plastic insects, medical supplies, feathers and butterfly wings, Marsh's collages present a personal and elaborate cosmology.

Charles Marsh: Collages ©1990-2000 will be on view through October 27th.
