Luis Cruz Azaceta 'Caught' 1993

Luis Cruz Azaceta, Caught, 1993. Acrylic on paper, 48 x 42 1/2 inches.

Collection of the Pérez Art Museum, Miami, FL.

Luis Cruz Azaceta is included in the exhibition On the Horizon at the Frist Art Museum, Nashville, TN.

This exhibition surveys contemporary Cuban art of multiple generations from the Pérez Art Museum, Miami, exemplifying the sophistication of creative expression in an authoritarian system. A commonality among many of the works in the exhibition is the depiction of a horizon line, used “as a motif and symbol of personal desire, existential longing, or geographical containment.” Azaceta frequently makes use of the image of a Cuban Balsero, or 'boat person,' such as in this 1993 drawing of a failed attempt to escape the country by sea.

The exhibition is on view from January 28 through May 1, 2022.
