Katherine Sherwood, 'After Josefa de Obidos,' 2020

Katherine Sherwood, After Josefa de Obidos, 2020. Mixed media on found cotton duck, 36 1/2 x 29 inches.

Works by Katherine Sherwood are on view alongside those of her former student and mentee, Cynthia Ona Innis, in the two-person exhibition Inside-Out at the Xela Institute of Art.

Sherwood taught Ona Innis at UC Berkeley, during which time they developed a close relationship. Both artists are currently based in the San Francisco Bay Area. The exhibition features work from Sherwood’s Brain Flowers and Venus series, which explore themes of feminism and disability. As a counterpart, Ona Innis’ paintings engage with nature: she adheres sewn, stretched, and disjointed canvases together in order to abstract and fragment landscapes.

Inside-Out will be on view at the Xela Institute of Art in Long Beach, CA through May 27, 2023.
