Congratulations to Enrique Chagoya, who is the recipient of a 2021 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship.

The fellowship, which has long been considered to be a top honor for artists, is awarded to “exceptional individuals in pursuit of scholarship in any field of knowledge and creation in any art form, under the freest possible conditions.” Chagoya is among 148 awardees who were chosen through a rigorous peer-review process from almost 3,000 applicants. In his paintings, drawings and prints, Chagoya addresses colonization as it manifests itself, from historical records through to modern-day border politics. By combining imagery from specific, disparate sources, he uses appropriation to call into question ideas of authorship and identity.
