525 West 26th Street in advance of construction in the Spring of 2005

From the Archives: 525 West 26th Street in advance of construction in the Spring of 2005.

When making the decision to move the gallery in 2005, it was both a simple and difficult choice. For decades its home had been on 57th Street, moving between three locations around the intersection of 57th and Fifth avenue since opening in New York in 1959. However, what was then a growing neighborhood of galleries in West Chelsea was an appealing new location for the evolving program. Not only was the area quickly becoming a destination for contemporary art, but the availability of larger, repurposed warehouse buildings was appealing. Finding the space on the first floor of 525 W 26th was an opportunity to not only move the gallery, but completely reimagine it. Originally a ____, was essentially starting from scratch - literally as the construction required a floor-to-ceiling re-build. Most memorably, the temporary flooring laid down during construction gave way at one point, fortunately without any serious injury but enough to make everyone involved glad when the concrete was finally poured.

Originally home to the Uris Iron Works, the space was essentially starting from scratch - literally as the construction required a floor-to-ceiling re-build.
