Press Release

New Constructions

Oct 15 - Nov 15, 1997

Roy De Forest: New Constructions will be on view at the George Adams Gallery from Wednesday, October 15th through Saturday, November 15th. This exhibition, the artist's first in New York since 1993, features seven new constructed paintings and works on paper. There is a strong emphasis on color, surface texture and dimension not only in the heavily impastoed surfaces, but in the carved forms mounted directly onto the canvasses and frames.

In this most recent group of works, all completed in 1997, DeForest continues to depict fantasy landscapes populated with horses, dogs, birds and hermits. Invigorated by the use of unorthodox materials, however, these new works mark a return to the three-dimensional painting format he began in the late 1970s. In Song of the Blackbird, for example, a black crow is sculpted out of foamcore laminated with masonite, while in Return to St. Helena, a carved  terrier is covered with neon-bright puff paint. Other works in the exhibition, similarly handled, are In Transit,  and In the Lair of the Mythic Catbird.
