New Paintings and Drawings

Apr 4 - Apr 29, 1995

This will be Valerio's first exhibition in two years and marks a return to the figure. His most recent work is called Bride and its subject stands facing the viewer in a mysterious room with two shadowy figures conversing in the background. The work continues a series of figure paintings with veiled meanings that the artist has produced over the last two decades.

Another new painting on view is called Monkey Still-Life and it continues his cycle of large scale still-life paintings initiated in the 1980s. This work makes use of familiar elements such as bowls of fruit and flowers, but with an underlying sense of foreboding suggested by such elements as a skull and a life mask of the artist himself. The painting is also distinguished by an unusual silvery light which distinguishes is from its predecessors.

Also included will be two highly finished graphite drawings, one is a detailed portrait of a friend, the other is a still life.
