Nov 22 - Dec 31, 1991
On Friday, November 22 the Frumkin/Adams Gallery will open an exhibition of recent bronze sculpture. The exhibition will consist of new and recent works by 14 artists: Phoebe Adams, Tom Aprile, Robert Arneson, Bard Breivik, Lesley Dill, Ming Fay, Chris Macdonald, James McGarrell, Tom Otterness, Sandra Shannonhouse, Jonathan Silver, Not Vital, David Weinrid, and Robin Winters.
This exhibition is an informal survey of artists working in bronze. Several of the participants, for example Arneson, Otterness and Winters, are well known for their work in this medium; others such as Aprile, McGarrell and Weinrib have only recently begun working in bronze and are exploring the medium as a way of altering their more familiar forms and imagery.
Among the works in the exhibition are Robert Arneson's Spearheards of a Rear Guard, a triple self-portrait set on a redwood base, and Neanderthal I and Neanderthal II, two large confrontational bust "portraits" by Tom Otterness. Also incorporating figurative imagery are works from the Sceptres series by Robin Winters, a series of small untitled narrative plaques by James McGarrell and Jonathan Silver's Antique Paige from his recent series based on classical fragments. Other works in the exhibition include Sandra Shannonhouse's gold plated bronze Hive I, two intensely painted wall sculptures from Bard Brevik's Parts of a Score series and Phoebe Adams' Start, a wall-to-floor piece that also incorporates copper and rubber hose.
Bronze will open Friday, November 22 and continue through the month of December. The gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday, 10 to 6 and from 10 to 5:30 on Saturdays.
